Qualifying exams are four hour written exams, and are given twice a year, in September right before the start of the Fall quarter, and in March right before the start of the Spring quarter. The Logic qualifying exam is generally offered only in the Fall. Students may petition to have a Spring exam in special circumstances, for example when this is necessary for meeting Satisfactory Progress.
The core qualifying exams consist of two written exams, one in algebra and one in combined real analysis and complex analysis. These are two- to three-hour exams covering the core material in each subject. The exams are administered twice a year, in September and May. Exams may be taken one at a time. Entering students are invited to attempt the September exams in their first year. Both exams.

Students must be enrolled or active in the university system at the time of taking the exam. All students must take qualifying exams, also known as prelims, in microeconomics and macroeconomics after successfully completing (grade C or better) the micro and macro.

PhD Qualifying Exams The written portion of the Ph.D. Qualifying Exam is a written exam covering fundamental material that students are expected to have covered before joining the Ph.D. program. The questions are taken from the following eight areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Cognitive: By tradition, in cognitive area qualifying exams, each committee member writes one question for the student to address in a paper (i.e., usually 3 questions for a single major and 4 papers for a double major). Usually the number of papers is the same as the number of committee members, although the number of papers can be changed by the committee if deemed appropriate for the student.

Distributed Written Qualifying Exam Nature of the Distributed (Written) Qualifying Exam. The qualifying exam is designed to measure the breadth of students’ knowledge in mathematics. While some students are able to pass the qualifying exam in one try, passing the exam early is mainly an indication that a student has attended an undergraduate university with a broad undergraduate program in mathematics.
